Fly, Birdie, Fly! By Alli Miffilin-Groce, Communications Team Member
Hello again, Unity Church of San Antonio. I have been very blessed to be asked to share with you again about my experiences, this time in assisting our very own Birdie Shawker. I have been working behind the scenes with Birdie the past month or so learning the ins and outs of Sunday morning church services. Now I’m here to tell you that there is more going on than meets the eye.
As a CommUNITY, we are supporting and uplifting Birdie in her spiritual journey towards Licensed Unity Teacher Certification. As part of her training, she will be spreading her wings and sharing her gifts with the Unity community at large in a more concrete way. In so doing, Birdie is working – as always – to ensure that we have all the tools we need in her brief absences.
I have enjoyed my experiences helping to coordinate church services and support all who make Sunday mornings happen. Many may ask what all goes into pulling off a Sunday service? Well, I could provide checklists and Power Point tutorials and the wheres and hows of each service, but that’s just details.
The Truth is Love. Love is how we have a service every week. Full time Minister or not, we as a community show up, stand up, and get the job done for one another. I would list all the loving and dedicated souls who work every week to make “church” happen, but I only have 500-800 words. I would hate to leave anyone out so I will simply say “Thank you, we are blessed by your gifts and presence.”
John Lennon said “Love is the answer and you know that for sure.” I know these words to be true because I have seen it in action. It is present when there are water bottles waiting for the musicians, host, and speakers. I have seen it in small last-minute Power Point adjustments so that everyone gets the correct information and sings the right verse. I have witnessed the planning and forethought that goes into each moment of a Sunday service. I have been briefed on the back up plans and “in case of emergencies.”
I am here to tell you that the Love of the Infinite Divine is all around us long before we ever set foot on campus. I know because I’ve seen it and shared it. Making every effort to anticipate the needs of so many is no easy task but the rewards are more than you can imagine. Divine Love only multiplies.
I am honored to serve our community in this way and be one of the many instruments through which Divine Love resonates. I have been given so much more than “The Keys to the Kingdom,” (as Birdie jokingly refers to her massive and heavy key ring.) I have a new insight and appreciation for all who make the Sunday service happen as well as all who keep their Divine appointment with Unity Church of San Antonio. Like many of you, I eagerly await the selection of a new minister and anticipate new and wonderful growth opportunities for all of us. I remain forever Blessed by my commitment and service to the Community of UCSA. Be the Love you wish to see!
