News Release: “Regional Ministers Contribute Locally”
Convention Attendees Spontaneously Donate to Haven for Hope
“Freed by Truth, Moving with Spirit” was the theme of the 2017 Unity Worldwide Ministries People’s Convention held at the Wyndham Hotel June 12-16, where over 400 Unity Ministers, Licensed Unity Teachers, and lay persons gathered to conduct business, hear speakers, and learn about topics relevant to their spiritual centers.
During a breakout session dedicated to discussing issues relevant to the Unity South Central Region, Reverend Sandra J. Campbell of Unity Temple on the Plaza in Kansas City, Missouri, initiated the idea of leaving a larger Unity footprint in San Antonio than holding a convention. Rev. Campbell suggested passing the hat and contributing whatever the attendees could as she had suggested in Orlando 2 years ago with another organization’s convention. “As I passed by so many homeless people on the streets of downtown San Antonio last week, I kept hearing a voice say “Do Something!” I couldn’t help but wonder what a difference we could make collectively if we just did something. I hesitated to bring it up during our meeting, but the voice of Spirit just kept getting louder inside me, screaming “Do something!” And we did.”
“I couldn’t help but notice how excited everyone in the room was by this idea, so I suggested Haven for Hope as the donation recipient because our local church had done service projects for them in the past.” said Jennifer Shawker, Communications and Activities Coordinator at the local Unity Church of San Antonio. She went on to explain to the group that Haven for Hope is well known for their work providing multiple services at their center for individuals who are experiencing homelessness.
The group of approximately 70 people from the Unity South Central Region, in a spontaneous act of love, took up a collection, raising funds for the local organization Shawker had suggested.
Rev. Toni Boehm, Ministry Consultant for Unity South Central region, anticipates even greater things to come for Unity conventions in addition to the work currently in place, stating, “It is said that one small action taken can shift and change a life or a movement. This was that step.”
