Pamela Taylor, Unity of SA Board of Trustees Member and Celebration Host
During the weekend of June 23-25, 2017, at Randy Davila’s new Insight Event Center off IH10, I had the pleasure of attending my first Unity board retreat. It was an incredible experience and re-affirmed my belief that Unity of San Antonio is indeed fortunate to have such a caring, committed, and talented Board of Trustees. The weekend was a time of personal spiritual renewal, an opportunity to connect at a deeper level with other board members, and uninterrupted time for the board to work on behalf of our amazing Unity Community.
This was the first retreat without our beloved Rev. Linda and her absence was palpable. We discovered that Rev. Linda, however, had prepared us well and actually had hand-picked each one of us, each member bringing unique capabilities to their position. Together, the board is well-rounded and extremely dedicated to advancing the church’s agenda.
We started and ended the retreat with prayer and meditation. Each board member was assigned one meal preparation ahead of time and we loved breaking bread together.
On Friday night, we had a beautiful Sacred Object sharing session and game night. Tim brought the game “Apples to Apples” and we thoroughly enjoyed playing it – lots of laughs with the crazy answers. Steve won but it was a close call!
Saturday morning started with a time of meditation and Tai Chi led by Karen. Having never done this before, I sincerely appreciate her patience and wonderful instruction. Afterward, we reviewed our mission, vision, and core values as presented by the working groups under Rev. Ron’s direction. We were updated on the minister search team and conducted our monthly business meeting.
On Saturday night, we had one of my personal favorite activities – “Heart Talk.” We passed the monkey (similar to a talking stick) and each member shared whatever was in their heart. When the monkey went around twice with no comments, we knew everyone was done sharing. It was a truly beautiful and healing experience and we discussed some light-hearted as well as heavy subject matter.
On Sunday morning we conducted our Sunday Service with each member sharing a favorite spiritual reading or personal insight. With the conclusion of the service, we dispersed in order to go back to our respective lives, having been truly blessed by this time apart and together, anticipating next year’s retreat. What an incredible experience with the most wonderful group of people I have ever had the pleasure of serving with – I feel truly blessed.
