David Groce, Music Team Member, Unity of SA CommUNITY Singers Director
This Sunday the CommUnity Singers will perform for the first time. They have worked diligently rehearsing the past four weeks. The group is a manifestation of the vision of our spiritual community for a more inclusive musical experience. Last Sunday we heard the abundance of musical talent from our youth. This week we will hear the sweet voices of many from our congregation. I am grateful for the opportunity to lead them. Preparing for this has been an incredible learning experience for all of us. I had so much fun creating the arrangement of the song we are singing.
Music is a powerful expression of the spiritual nature of reality. When we hear notes in harmony we find them pleasing because we can sense the alignment of the sound vibrations. A musical sound has a consistent vibration. In most of the western world the note A is agreed to be a frequency of 440 vibrations per second. The foundation of western harmony is the major chord. The frequencies of the major chord have the ratio of 4:5:6. Based on the note A this chord has the frequencies: 440, 550, and 660 vibrations per second. Though we do not consciously count these vibrations we are able to sense their alignment. When we hear notes that clash we sense discord because the frequencies do not line up in pleasing simple ratios. When more than one instrument or voice plays the same note the vibrations strengthen each other because they are the same frequency. Even though each voice in the choir sings the same volume as they would when singing alone, together their voices are more powerful than a solo singer.
Our emotions, thoughts and beliefs are also a vibration. When we experience fear, anger, or grief we feel discomfort because we are not aligned with our divine nature which knows only good. We feel empathy because we sense the vibrations of others. We seek to find harmony with others by aligning with them. We sense discord when our vibrations do not align with each other. When we share a vision together our vibrations strengthen each other creating a powerful force for change.
We each have a unique passion and perspective. When we find how to best express it the good we share with the world is a divine note. As other people express their divine potential, these notes form a symphony of good that transforms the world.
When we recite our vision and mission statements during the Sunday service, we are aligning our vibrations. As we each fulfill the different roles needed to support our spiritual community, we create the beautiful music that is our good radiating in the world. As you enjoy the singers making music on Sunday you will hear a group of people aligning their vibrations to create harmony and strengthening each other’s voices to create a powerful sound. Pay attention to your vibration and find alignment with your divine nature and with others and experience the power of harmony.
