I’m Divine: What’s Your Super Power? Youth Ministry Led Sunday Service July 30, 2017!
Please note: there will be no youth ministry classes held on Sunday, July 30. Everyone is invited to join us in the sanctuary!
At Unity Church of San Antonio, any month with a 5th Sunday provides an opportunity for our church to have what we call “family Sunday” in which all of our members, from youngest to most mature, join together in the sanctuary for our 11:00 am service. About 3 months ago, I approached our Chair of our Board of Trustees with an idea – instead of our children and teens joining in the service as observers, we wanted to join in the service as leaders – speakers, musicians, and volunteers providing service to our larger CommUNITY. Afterall, these are the roles our children and teens are beautifully growing into and these are the virtues and activities about which we learn and discuss every Sunday in our Youth Ministry classes. How to be the light in this world around us.
On Sunday, July 30, this dream will be brought to life during the 11:00 AM service! Several of our children and teens have chosen a way to serve, and a main power to either speak about or to base their service upon. They have worked together – with purpose, passion, and with a healthy dose of fun thrown in – over the past several weeks to absorb the ways the 12 Powers work in their lives.
The 12 Powers were first written about, in the Unity movement, by Unity co-founder Charles Fillmore. He called them the Twelve Powers of Man. And UCSA’s former minister, Rev. Linda Martella-Whitsett, wrote her 2nd book, Divine Audacity, about these same 12 Powers, with the byline, “Dare to be the Light of the World”. In planning the July 30 service, the youth noticed that two of the powers truly came in to focus as the building blocks of the planning process – Will and Wisdom.
Will is for thriving, for fully experiencing all that is. To access our Power of Will, we ask ourselves, “What is my most pressing desire?” Will asks us to pay attention to what we are longing for, to pay attention to what is missing in our lives. Within the Power of Will we make choices by narrowing down the multitude of options in our lives. We then commit to holding our attention on the choice we have made. And finally we express a willingness to stay on the narrow path which we have chosen. All of these aspects have been called upon by our children and teens who have planned this service.
And the Power of Wisdom has come forth in this planning process as well. Through the Power of Wisdom, our planning team took the time to pay attention to what life is attempting to tell us. We called upon our ability to use meditation as well as collaboration as we each listened for repeated themes or clues that life was offering us as we worked towards our common goal. By using our judgment we evaluated and clarified the points of today’s message. Then came our use of discernment as we allowed space for the highest, best response to come forth. And all of this was handled with a healthy dose of intuition – that aha moment when we trust our internal guidance system to lead us on the best path to accomplish our desires.
So, with these things in mind, I invite you to join us on Sunday, July 30, at 11:00 AM in the sanctuary. I think you will be amazed by the messages you will hear and see, but not surprised – because these young people truly are the light of the world. I invite you to bask in their glow as they share the story of their Super Powers and then join us afterwards as we have a time of fellowship, food, and fun in our CommUNITY Center!
