Musings from the Journey

Rev. Nina Clark

This month as I watch the leaves turn orange and yellow and red and begin to collect in swirling piles on the ground, I find myself thinking of the value of a consistent prayer practice. I look at the change of colors and think about all of the small processes that had to occur for that tree to release that leaf and let it fall away. It isn’t something that just suddenly happens; it is the result of many small steps, many small changes.
And so it is with spiritual growth: many small steps consistently taken over time result in what, from the outside looking in, appears to be a large shift at some point in time. Our beloved Myrtle is such a good example of this: daily she sat and daily she immersed her thinking in that of wholeness and one day she was well. Frederick Bailes is another good example – he also sat daily with his attention on God, and there came a day when his diabetes was gone. Others have sat until they had an insight that life could be joyful; others sat until they realized they could let themselves be loved, or that they could risk loving.
A consistent prayer practice constitutes those small daily steps that move us towards an increased awareness of our Divine Nature. And like those autumn leaves, we get to shed all that would seem to keep us separate from our knowing of our oneness with the One and Only Life there is.

"Transcending Perceived Limitations"

Transcending Perceived Limitations
A metaphysical (or affirmative) prayer with another person shifts the focus
from begging a distant or conscious deity that “hears” our prayers and acts
upon them to actively realizing and affirming together the innate wholeness,
peace, and divine perfection already present within us and those we pray
with, our prayer partner.

We know in Unity we focus on twelve powers...

UNITY

At Unity, we affirm the inherent dignity, worth, and spiritual identity of every person. We recognize that humanity expresses its relationship with the Divine through many paths, traditions, and sincere convictions.
We are aware of recent changes to the U.S. Department of Defense’s religious classification system, which significantly reduces the number of recognized faith identifiers. While administrative systems may change, Unity holds that no list can define or limit the universal presence of God, nor the authentic spiritual lives of individuals.
We believe that honoring religious and spiritual diversity strengthens our shared humanity. The ability for individuals to see their faith tradition acknowledged supports belonging, spiritual well-being, and the free exercise of religion.
Our teachings remind us:
* There is only one Presence and one Power—active in all people and all faiths.
* Truth is not confined to any single tradition, but is revealed in diverse ways across humanity.
* Spiritual care is most meaningful when it honors the unique beliefs and lived experiences of each individual.
We join with others across faith traditions in affirming the importance of religious inclusion, compassionate care, and the freedom of every person to name and live their faith authentically.
We hold in prayer all who serve, and all who support them, that they may experience belonging, respect, and access to the spiritual support that nourishes their lives.
In all things, Unity remains committed to being a voice for inclusivity, understanding, and love in action.

Deidre McCalla in Concert

Deidre McCalla in Concert

An evening concert with the talented Deidre McCalla - Saturday, October 10, 2026

Join us for an unforgettable evening with acclaimed singer-songwriter Deidre McCalla, whose powerful presence and soul-stirring music captivate from the very first note. Blending folk, roots, and rich storytelling, her songs weave together hope, resilience, and the beauty of the human spirit. A celebrated and award-winning artist, Deidre brings both heart and fire to every performance. Come be moved, inspired, and uplifted—this is a concert you won’t want to miss.
October 10th 7-8pm Tickets $20 at the door.

A Black woman, mother, lesbian, feminist, Deidre has long stood at the
forefront of acoustic singer-songwriters reshaping expectations of how Black folk
do folk. She learned early on that life begins with an acoustic guitar, and Deidre’s
songwriting carries an unyieldingly honest perspective expressed with a lyric touch
that relentlessly celebrates the power and diversity of the human spirit. As a
performer Deidre McCalla doesn’t merely take the stage - she owns it.

Youth & Family Ministry

What's Buzzin' in YFM?

With the fall season, it's a good time to look at what there is to release and let go of.  September brough surprises to our Youth and Family Ministry (YFM) department.  With continued growth in many of our classes, we decided to release and let go of the previous configuration of our classrooms, and rotate the classes around to accommodate all of their needs.  Change can be uncomfortable and I am so proud of all of our teachers and kids for taking on this project with gusto! Everyone is resettled into their new rooms and it is working out well.  What is it in your family that would make a difference if you let it go?  Is there a structure or schedule in place that maybe no longer serves your family's needs?  Perhaps it's a room that would work better for your family if it was reconfigured? When we take a leap of faith to let go of something in our life- rather it be spiritual, mental, or physical, it can feel very freeing and light - after we get over our fears of making the change, and take those first steps.  For me it was a physical space that impacted my internal state.  We have been holding onto a twin bed that used to belong to one of my kids.   I love the style of it and in order to let go of the bed, I had to also let go of my thoughts of lack (What if I need it again and don't have it?  Will I be able to afford to buy another one, if I want to in the future?) and my memories that I had attached to the bed.  For me, letting go of a piece of furniture took me stepping into faith.  We listed it for sale, moved it out of the room, and reconfigured the room to better suit how we have been using it.  It feels amazing and the room works so much better for our family now.  I invite you to look at what you can let go of this season that will make a beautiful difference for you and your family.

SAVE THE DATE! Our district Uniteen (middle school age) Retreat will be November 6-8 in Dallas, TX.  This is an amazing event designed specifically for middle school pre-teens.  More information and registration details will be posted this month.
