Unity of San Antonio

Musings from the Journey

Rev. Nina Clark

Ahh… November in San Antonio. That first cool front, the crisp bite of morning air on our cheeks, and the light getting low and golden. My neighbors venturing out to sit on their front porches and enjoy the cooler autumn air.  Fall has a way of tapping us on the shoulder and saying, “Hey, time to start wrapping things up.”
When I was in Seattle, I could measure my activity and rest by my garden - and by November we were putting the garden to bed, tucking the beds in with compost and mulch, getting ready for winter.
But here, with two growing seasons, the temptation is to keep going, keep planting, keep reaping.
And that feels like a metaphor for life in the modern age. There isn’t a natural place to wind down, prepare for rest. But rest is a necessary part of our rhythm. We need to wrap things up so that we can process and embody what we’ve grown, learned and harvested.
This season is a good time to explore how we can wind a few things down and give ourselves a chance to rest and digest our experiences from the year. There is a season for everything, including a time to slow down.
And so I invite you this month, before things wind up again for Thanksgiving, to find a time to just sit. Sit with a cup of something delicious and warm on your porch, your balcony, your backyard and just be. Let yourself bask in a moment or three of gratitude. Name a few things, big or small, the warm mug in your hands, a friend who called, the beauty around you, and then just rest in that feeling.
As we head into Thanksgiving, I’m grateful for this community and for you, dear reader. You are a blessing. Thank you for being with us.

"What are you Asking?" Fall Series

"What are you Asking?" Fall Series

with Rev. Nina Clark

What Are You Asking?
The Questions That Change Us

What if the quality of our lives depends, in part, on the quality of the questions we ask?

Every day, consciously or unconsciously, we ask questions that shape our choices, our relationships, and the way we see what’s possible. Some keep us stuck. Others open doors we didn’t even know were there.

In this five-week series, inspired by Debbie Ford’s The Right Questions, we’ll explore ten powerful questions designed to help us move beyond automatic reactions and make more conscious, life-giving choices.

Because sometimes the way forward doesn’t begin with having the right answer.

It begins with asking a better question.

A Message From Your Prayer Chaplains

A Message From Your Prayer Chaplains

"Sacred Surprise"

Here is a short poem of trust, curiosity and wonder by John O’Donohue.

“I’d love to live as the river flows

Carried by the surprise

Of its own unfolding.”

Sometimes surprises can feel to me as if I did something wrong and got off track. The Sufis say that even this is an experience of God.

Sufis have 99 names for God. In The Sufi Book of Life...

UNITY

At Unity, we affirm the inherent dignity, worth, and spiritual identity of every person. We recognize that humanity expresses its relationship with the Divine through many paths, traditions, and sincere convictions.
We are aware of recent changes to the U.S. Department of Defense’s religious classification system, which significantly reduces the number of recognized faith identifiers. While administrative systems may change, Unity holds that no list can define or limit the universal presence of God, nor the authentic spiritual lives of individuals.
We believe that honoring religious and spiritual diversity strengthens our shared humanity. The ability for individuals to see their faith tradition acknowledged supports belonging, spiritual well-being, and the free exercise of religion.
Our teachings remind us:
* There is only one Presence and one Power—active in all people and all faiths.
* Truth is not confined to any single tradition, but is revealed in diverse ways across humanity.
* Spiritual care is most meaningful when it honors the unique beliefs and lived experiences of each individual.
We join with others across faith traditions in affirming the importance of religious inclusion, compassionate care, and the freedom of every person to name and live their faith authentically.
We hold in prayer all who serve, and all who support them, that they may experience belonging, respect, and access to the spiritual support that nourishes their lives.
In all things, Unity remains committed to being a voice for inclusivity, understanding, and love in action.

A Course In Miracles

A Course In Miracles

ACIM (A Course in Miracles) meets weekly both on site at Unity of SA, 8103 Broadway and by Zoom on Mondays from 7:00 - 8:30 p.m. To join via Zoom, scroll down and click the link.

ACIM Facilitator, Dutch Berkley, started reading ACIM in the 1980s after begin given a copy by a world-famous transactional analysis counselor. He attended the Unity Church ACIM meetings for many years and began managing meetings several years ago. Now retired, Dutch holds a master’s degree in Psychology and a Counseling License and has found ACIM to be the best mental and spiritual health path if your intention is to create peace of mind, a loving of self and a loving of others.

ACIM is compatible with Unity Church beliefs. Each week we read and discuss a few pages and feel a loving connection because we believe that we are all part of a loving God. In the stressful world, we learn the concept that we can change the way we think about our self and others.

You are welcome to join our meetings at any time. ACIM presents the ideas in various ways so that they will dwell in your mind and you will find them quite amazing. ACIM students find it helpful to meet with others to listen and share their paths of self-discovery. All are welcome.

Youth & Family Ministry

What's Buzzin' in YFM?

We are entering the season of miracles and family connections.  And, yes! They can go together.  November is a time when we focus on giving thanks, appreciating what we have.  It is a time when many of us travel long distances to see family.  Sometimes we are grateful for those opportunities to connect.  Other times, we dread it.  As families with children still at home, we have an opportunity to create the traditions we want our children to remember, and traditions are not just about what we are doing.  They are also about WHO we are BEING during those activities.  We are our children's role models.  I cannot count the number of times I have heard my words out of my kids' mouths, only to shake my head in the  realization that there is an opportunity for me to transform who I am being, and what I am saying.  In YFM (Youth and Family Ministry), Unity Principle number 3 says (in kid language), "I create my experiences by what I choose to think and what I feel and believe."  I invite you to lean into that principle this month.  Let's create miracles with our families and the people we are spending our holiday with by expressing love, kindness, and patience with each person who we come into contact with.  Our kids are watching.  They will see and emulate our actions.  I want my words and actions to be worth emulating, and even miracle-making.  Let's see how many miracles we can create and celebrate together this month.  Happy Thanksgiving!
